What's the difference between a panel upgrade and a service upgrade?

A panel upgrade replaces just the electrical panel. A service upgrade replaces everything from the utility connection point inward — the weatherhead, service entrance cable, meter base, main panel, and grounding system. Service upgrades are needed when the wiring from the street to your home is undersized for your power needs, or when upgrading from 100A to 200A+ where the existing service entrance cable can't handle the load.

How long does a service upgrade take, and will I be without power?

A complete service upgrade typically takes 1–2 days. The actual power outage is usually 4–8 hours on the day Eversource disconnects the old service. We schedule this in advance so you can plan around it. Most customers use this window to run errands or spend the day out.

Do I need Eversource approval for a service upgrade?

Yes, but we handle all of it. We submit the application, schedule the disconnect and reconnect, and coordinate the inspection. You don't need to deal with the utility company directly — that's part of our service.

Do I need 200 Amp or 400 Amp service?

Most standard homes are well-served by 200 Amp service. However, if you have a large home (4,000+ sq ft), multiple EV chargers, dual electric heat pumps, and electric appliances, a 400 Amp service may be required to safely handle the peak load.

Is a whole-home surge protector included?

Yes, as per the latest National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements, we install a whole-home surge protector with every new service upgrade to protect your home's electronics.

Will you upgrade the grounding system too?

Absolutely. A critical part of a service upgrade is bringing the grounding and bonding system up to current NEC standards. This often involves driving new ground rods and bonding the water and gas pipes.

How does the town inspection process work?

We manage the entire permit process. Once the upgrade is complete and Eversource restores power, we schedule the final inspection with the town electrical inspector to ensure everything meets local and national codes.
